Rachel Miller is a gorgeous, arrogant stripper. Every man wants her, every woman envies her. She befriends another stripper, Lisa, a struggling photographer. The two women visit an exhibit showing Lisa's portraits of elderly models whom Rachel finds disturbing. After slipping and falling several times, Rachel consults her doctor and is eventually diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. Frustrated and in denial, she reacts by sleeping with strange men to reassert her self-confidence. Eventually, she is forced to accept her disability, buys a cane and despairs that no man will want her. Much to her surprise, she meets Evan, who falls in love with her. The two begin to build a sweet, tender relationship in spite of Rachel's insecurities. However, Evan's father is an important politician and frowns upon the relationship. One night, Rachel and Lisa go to a comedy show. This triggers something in Rachel's mind, as she realizes that she was born to perform in front of men. Her sarcastic wit, fearlessness and selfdeprecation are perfect for the stage. Rachel and Lisa go on the road as Rachel hones her stand-up skills, growing into an edgy, confident comedienne. Her friendship with Lisa deepens, and we discover that Lisa was once a teenage mother who was forced by her parents to give up her child for adoption. Not everything is rosy, however, as Rachel begins to tackle difficult subjects, like religion and intolerance. She starts receiving death threats from an anonymous man. Additionally, there is pressure on her from political and religious groups.
